The Real Reason Quitting Drinking Feels So Exhausting (It's Not the Alcohol)

Most people trying to cut back on drinking assume the hard part is the alcohol itself. It's usually something else entirely.
You've probably listened to the podcasts. Read the books. Followed the sober accounts. Maybe done a Dry July or two.
Most people think they want to stop drinking. What they actually want is for the conversation in their head to stop.
The daily loop is familiar to most: "Not tonight." By afternoon, "Maybe just one." "I've had a hard day, I deserve this." "Okay fine, I'll properly start again tomorrow."
Every single day. That negotiation, that guilt, that quiet bargaining, it's exhausting in a way that has nothing to do with the alcohol itself.
If the drink disappeared tomorrow but the mental loop stayed exactly the same, would that actually feel like freedom? Or just a pause?
That loop is the real cost. Freedom isn't a life without alcohol. It's a mind without the noise.
