Sometimes the hardest part of change isn't giving something up, it's facing who you are without it. Here's why that fear is so common, and so misunderstood.
Sometimes the fear isn't giving something up. It's meeting yourself without it.
Alcohol quietly does a lot of jobs. It can be a social identity (who you are in a room). A coping identity (how you get through the hard days). A reward identity (what you've "earned" at the end of it all).
Take it away without addressing what it was doing for you, and there's a question most people spend a lifetime avoiding: who am I when I'm not managing, numbing, or performing?
That question is uncomfortable. But it's also where the actual relief lives, not in white-knuckling through cravings, but in no longer needing the thing that was used to cope in the first place.
